Position Announcement

Position: Chaplain, Hampton University

Duties and Responsibilities: The Hampton University Chaplain is responsible for performing the official spiritual function at all university-wide events, including Opening Convocation, Commencement, and Honors Programs; conducting Sunday morning services in Memorial Church; developing strategies and providing programs that nurture faith; officiating at weddings, funerals, dedications, etc., as requested; facilitating non-denominational Christian Fellowship and providing pastoral counseling to  students, faculty, and staff, as needed; providing experiences for students to grow in their faith through Bible Study, Fellowship and Outreach; serving as the executive secretary for the Hampton University  Ministers’ Conference; coordinating and executing the on-going activities of the Hampton University Ministers’ Conference/Choir Directors’ Organist Guild; serving as the ex-officio advisor to the Student Christian Association; and teaching six hours per semester in an area of expertise.

Qualifications:

Required: Master of Divinity degree or Seminary degree in a related field from an Association of Theological Schools (ATS) accredited Seminary; strong verbal and written communication skills; strong leadership and organizational skills; ability to take into account the diverse religious and spiritual needs of students, faculty, and administrators; ability to collaborate with others and work as an efficient team member; ability to maintain and develop relationships with local supporting congregations – engaging in creative and enterprising approaches to ministry; experience in planning large events.

PreferredMinimum of five years ordained ministry experience in direct ministry with college age young adults.
